A cycle isn’t biased but society is. It’s not a big deal when men do it, but switch the gender and the ensuing culture shock disrupts traffic flow — the sight of a woman exercising her agency in life gives society a meltdown and above all it’s an open call for harassment.

Women in Karachi took cycle as a medium to counter these stereotypes and drove around the city to give the message of peace, empowerment and equality on this Independence day.

The cycling event was organized by Ayesha Aslam, storyteller, cyclist and a freelance journalist hailing from Karachi. Ayesha has been advocating free access to public spaces, countering negative labels and societal taboos.
